Low speed handling is enhanced with a bow thruster and an articulating rudder which provides substantially more turning effect.
An 7.5 HP 3 phase 220v electric motor is installed with belt drive to the shaft providing for "get home" power in the event of a problem with the drive engine. The Onan MDJE-18R diesel generator provides 7.5KW 3 phase power for the get home motor and 5KW single phase for house loads. The get home motor provides steady drive forward at about 5 knots in calm water.
An all new main power panel and associated wiring is installed near the interior helm.
A Statpower Truecharge 40+ battery charger and a separate Mastervolt 12/80 battery charger maintain the batteries from generator or shore power. An inverter provides AC power from the batteries when the Onan generator is not running.
The battery bank includes six 6v "golf cart" batteries arranged as three in parrallel in each box and the two boxes connected in series as one 12v bank for house power and one 8D size main engine starting battery and a separate starting battery for the Onan generator.

The Willard 40 Nomad is a very high quality fiberglass hull with a fiberglass over plywood upper structure built by skilled boat builders in southern California. The design is based on a William Garden double-ended displacement hull intended for sea worthy, economical long distance cruising. The 600 gallon fuel tank gives it well over 2000 nm range and the hull design is intended for safe, offshore passage in any sea condition. This boat is hull #1 of the "400" "wide body" series and has been updated and carefully maintained throughout its life including installation of an articulating rudder and an electric "get home" motor driving the prop shaft. It is in outstanding condition as a contemporary yacht and ready to go to sea.
Tank capacity quoted in this listing is as reported by the owners and as listed in the manufacturers publications. We have not independently verified any tank capacity and make no guaranty of tank capacity. While the boat has been owned by this family, the fuel tank was opened up, access ports installed the tank was thoroughly inspected and cleaned.

Entry is through a door on the starboard side into the aft cockpit area. The cockpit features a "U" shaped wrap around couch built into the double ended transom and is fully enclosed with canvas and isenglas and a hard top overhead. A ladder to port leads up to the spacious boat deck and flying bridge which is protected with a bimini cover over the seating and helm area. A folding mast allows for boat house storage and lower bridge clearance. The mast and boom, which is a new aluminum item, also carries a useful steady sail and assists in lauching boats and kayaks stored on the boat deck. A folding stair can be deployed allowing direct access from the bridge to the foredeck. An inflatable RIB tender with 15HP outboard is carried on Olsson electric davits from the stern.
A door in the aft bulkhead from the cockpit leads to the main salon area with a dining area to starboard and open seating area to port. The lower cabinets all feature original oil paintings of nautical scenes done by a previous owner. The interior features new carpets and upholstery. Forward to starboard is the interior helm station and to port is the galley and a large, built in chart table which features a glass port showing the autopilot compass below. A new Force 10 3 burner gas range is installed in the galley along with a refrigerator. Under the helm seat is a second, large, built in refrigerator in addition to the unit in the galley. Two independent Wallas forced air cabin heating systems keep the interior comfortable. The domestic water system includes dual filters and a UV treatment system.
Down stairs forward to starboard is a large head and separate shower. To port is the master stateroom with double berth and ensuite head. Forward is the bow guest compartment with a "V" berth. The dining area in the main salon can be converted to a double berth for extra accommodations if needed.

This is one of the best examples of the Willard 40 Trawler around. It has a long history of careful maintenance and thoughtful upgrades to make it a very contemporary, long distance cruiser capable of motoring to Hawaii or Alaska in comfort. A true passagemaker.
